OUR STORY

A Century of Tradition Established 1890

Since 1955 the Gerst Haus has been a Nashville favorite, providing the best in German food in an authentic beer hall atmosphere. Our menu includes a variety of German and American food.  Our signature dishes include our fresh wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and corned beef and cabbage.  We are noted for the “Best” Reuben sandwich in Nashville.  We feature giant frozen Fishbowls of our own Gerst Amber beer, as well as 26 draughts and a large selection of imported beers.  Our goal is to provide good food, good drink, and good service.  We pride ourselves on a fun and authentic German atmosphere and have a live Polka band every Friday and Saturday night.  Come and enjoy a meal with us.

 Willkommen…
To the Gerst Haus, since 1955, a German tradition in fine foods, with recipes handed down from old German and Swiss families.  The flavorful aroma of German sausages and hot potato salad floats through the air.  Old Nashville and the roaring twenties live again in the Gerst Haus, a living reminiscence of the great old days of the Gerst Brewery, 1890-1955.  Traditions still remain…on display in the original Backbar, brought from the Tap Room of the Brewery, are the Drinking Horns displayed in the Tennessee Centennial of 1897.  Also displayed is a painting of Donau, the Kentucky Derby winner of 1910, owned by Grandfather Gerst.  Donau was the only Nashville horse to ever win the Kentucky Derby.  All bring memories of other days in older times.  Enjoy your meal with us.

Jim and Jerry Chandler opened the first Sportsman’s Grille restaurant in 1985 with ten items on the menu.  They wanted to recreate a northern hunting lodge atmosphere with fresh, hand-packed burgers, chili, catfish and cold beer.  The business and menu have since expanded with the purchase of the Gerst Haus (German-American restaurant) in 1988 (moved to present location in 2000), the opening of Sportsman’s Grille in the Village in 1991 and the Sportsman’s Lodge in Cool Springs in 1998.  Other business ventures include, Melrose Billiards (opened in 1969) and 20th Century Billiard in Hillsboro Village.  They also own and operate Gerst Bavarian Haus, Sportsman’s Pub and Billiards, and Smitty’s Little Tavern in Evansville, Indiana.  The entire Chandler family is involved with the operation of the Businesses.  The family’s passion for good food, comfortable atmosphere, and family gatherings inspire them to provide a great all-around experience.  The service is friendly and all food is prepared with the freshest, natural ingredients from family recipes.
